I have been wondering about the meaning of Esther Marie's Chinese name and am looking forward to arriving in China so I can ask our guide. Both Joshua and MaryAlyce were from provinces where they spoke Mandarin. Esther Marie was born in Guangdong Province and Cantonese is the language spoken.
I looked online and I have found the following meanings:
Guan: gate, gateway, mountain pass; to close; to shut; to turn off; to concern; to involve
(This is her surname.)
Hai: the sea, ocean
Mei: beautiful, enchanting, rose, plum
Of course, putting the names Hai and Mei together could change the meaning. That is why I want to ask someone.
We have chosen Esther Marie as her English name. I just know this child is going to have the same selfless and brave spirit that the Biblical Esther had.
Esther: star, myrtle leaf, hidden or secret
ESTHER
Gender: Feminine
Usage: English, Jewish, French, Biblical
Other Scripts: אֶסְתֵר (Hebrew)
Pronounced: ES-tur (English), es-TER (French)
Possibly means "star" in Persian. Alternatively it could be a Hebrew form of ISHTAR, the name of a Persian goddess. The Book of Esther in the Old Testament tells of Queen Esther, the Jewish wife of the king of Persia, who saves many Jews from persecution.
Marie: french form of the name "Mary" which means "wished for child" or "sea of bitterness"
MARY
Gender: Feminine
Usage: English, Biblical
Pronounced: MER-ee [key]
Usual English form of Maria, which was the Latin form of the New Testament Greek names Μαριαμ (Mariam) or Μαρια (Maria) (the spellings are interchangeable), which were from the Hebrew name מִרְיָם (Miryam). The meaning is not known for certain, but there are several theories including "sea of bitterness", "rebelliousness", and "wished for child". However it was most likely originally an Egyptian name, perhaps derived in part from mry "beloved" or mr "love".
This is the name of several New Testament characters, most importantly Mary the virgin mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene. Two queens of England have had this name, as well as a Queen of Scotland, Mary Queen of Scots.
We like the meanings "star" and "wished for child".....Esther Marie is definitely a "wished for child" who, we believe, will one day shine like a "star" showing the light of Jesus to all!
